My trusty and amazingly talented photographer, Holly Roy Photography, and I were the recipients of a VIP invite to the band Inverter’s “live-set recording session”.
Inverter won and was crowned “Metal Act Of The Year” for the Boston Music Awards in 2021. They have five LPs under their belt, all of which can be purchased on their
website, www.InverterBand.com, including their latest release, Welcome To Earth. I got turned on to the band when Corey Glover, my favorite singer of all time, appeared on their song “400 Beats Per Minute” off Sonic Vandalism.
The room was set up like an actual Inverter show. There were about 20-30 of us in attendance. Oh, and it was hot as fuck. We were given no instructions at all, or maybe we missed that part?
The band members went “backstage” to change into matching blazers sporting art created by frontman Derek “Deek” Diedricksen. He took the mic and gushed about how awesome it was backstage with shrimp for days and champagne fountains. Then he confessed that it was actually just a bunch of abandoned desks.
It was all systems go and Inverter took the stage and gave us a roundhouse punch, to our delight, of a thirteen song set and three song encore. This was an actual Inverter show. There were video cameras in place all around the room, along with some handhelds, as well as a guy that captured the full audio. Everyone was standing around watching except one enthusiastic guy named Pat that was constantly moving and brought a hat collection for people to use at will.
Inverter opened with new track “Electroshock Body Rock” and it was immediately my new favorite tune of theirs. Pat didn’t bop alone anymore, me and some other guy couldn’t contain ourselves and joined in. Next up was “Back In The Dirt” (Inverter) and “Last Summer” (Another Avalanche) before we got two new tunes back to back, “Devastate” and “Radio Shack” (Welcome To Earth). I had to exit for a moment to grab some cold water that was on hand while the band kept it going with “Bulldoze” (Bare Bones). I grabbed one of Pat’s hats on my way back in, a bedazzled black cowboy hat. The grooving rolled on with “Bow To Zod” (Bare Bones) and “Monsters Robot Graffiti” (Sonic Vandalism). Pat approached me and wordlessly took my hat and replaced it with an asian conical hat. I wore it for “Surrounded” (BB) but wasn’t really feeling the headdress meant for working in a rice paddy so I ditched it for “A Different Gun” (BB). Fan favorite, “Stone Cold Shocker” (SV), was on deck before the main set wrapped with a new single, “Excitebike”. The band thanked everyone for coming out and being a part of their live performance. Guitarist Bill Bracken exclaimed, “Hey look, our wives are here! They never come to anything!” Deek asked fans to shout out some songs they wanted to hear and then the band served em up for a three song encore. “Bound For Japan” (BB), “No Savior” (AA) and “Suckers” (Inverter). The band thanked us for coming out to “hang during our live-set recording session…for a future video release”. It was the first time they played “Electroshock Body Rock” live. They gave one final shout out to the crew and sound team before we all gathered for a group photo. There was a mini merch table where everyone could grab a shirt or CD. I chatted with singer Deek post gig. The guy is so interesting. We discussed pizza, salvaging carriage dumps, and his upcoming trip north to work on tree houses. He is the former HGTV host of Tiny House Builders. He’s also an artist that created the stage props, logo, t-shirt designs, etc. How could you not like someone that tragically underrated Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid refers to as “a real one”? Guitarist Bill Bracken, or as I call him “Release The Bracken”, joined us and I proclaimed how impressed I was with his guitar playing, the guy is really good. Bassist Jeff “El Jefe”, who brings riffs and an eternal smile, checked in for a photo op. Drummer Jimmy Evangelista hauled all his own gear while we all bullshitted and he’s probably still waiting for the bacon he was promised during the gig.
Inverter is a hardcore metal band, with an emphasis on hardcore, peppered with imaginative themes. Follow their socials and, if you’re lucky, catch a live show.
